Contract

In regard to this entry, I have decided to take the plunge and get a contract. According to my manifold, scrupulous calculations this will save me a grand total of about £5-6 a month, as well as the cost of a new phone which would be a (relatively) major outlay. This is good, although not a little scary – call it commitmentophobia, stereotypical man-behaviour, poor financial organisation, whichever excuse you wish! Somehow the word ‘contract’ has a similar impact to the word ‘responsibility’ accompanying a door key when you were about 10. It has a weight far disproportionate to both its letter count and the item which accompanies it.

On the plus side, it gives me a credit record which I can wave proudly at passing mortgage companies when I’m older. And 1100 free minutes/texts. The latter is the important one really, I’ll be much older (and richer, hopefully) than I am now before the mortgage component comes into play.

I’m also leaving O2, with whom I have been since they were BT Cellnet. The nice man on the phone tried to sell me all sorts of things when I rang up to get my PAC code, but using my research I argued his sales pitch into the proverbial mud. I still felt a bit like a deserter though – funny how brand loyalty works…

It\'s \'wine\' honest!

  1. So who are you going with?

  2. Contracts! Uncharted territory, them. Then again, I’d probably phone/text people more if I had one. As it is, I only spend about £5 a month and it becomes a vicious cycle. And I know exactly what you mean about brand loyalty, even though Vodafone have done nothing but take money off me for the past four years.

W.r.t. ‘responsibility’ being too long a word for ‘doorkey’ – that’s true until you actually lose one

  3. 3, on a promotional contract which they’re running which will stand me in god stead financially.

@ Lucy: I always spent about £15-£26 over the course of a month, and my new contract is £20. And yes, I think it does get you into a cycle and maybe I’ll now use my phone more than I did before. Also, know what you mean about the oddness behind brand loyalty – O2 never really did anything but force me to read reams of small print to avoid being overcharged. I still think they’re a pretty good bet on pay as you go though. They did a good job once I managed to wrangle 200 free texts out of them for every £10 I topped up…

  4. I’m a pay as you go gal ;o)
    That was rubbish…sorry.

I don’t spend enough on my phone to warrant a contract and I think in all honesty it’d befuddle me entirely. Simple por moi, ta.

I want to know what phone you’ve decided on, sir :oD

  5. I have decided on a black Sony K660i. They say it has ‘Wine’ coloured highlights, but they are basically pink. I don’t mind though, I like it regardless. I’ve included a picture in the blog.

  9. OH GOD the Sony joysticks. LITERALLY the most annoying piece of buttonry known to mankind.

I barely used my phone at all until I started getting free texts for every however-much-I-top-up. But I get into this terrible cycle, being a text-only gal, of using my entire free text allowance but not then topping up and therefore shelling out a lot the next month because I then have to pay for all my texts.
