Why are they so bloody hard to tie up?!! ARGH!!!

(and no, pre-made ones are rubbish and don’t have the undone-around-your-neck cool factor in the later evening. That, and I don’t own a ready made one.)

Morning?

October 29, 2008 on 8:18 pm | In Discussions | 1 Comment

I was having a discussion recently about timetables, in which it was stated that my friend’s favourite day ‘had lectures at 12-2 and 3-4.’ It sprung to mind because that is possibly one of the worst distributions of lectures I could have, with the exception of 12-6 which would, of course, be inferior even to the above.

Basically, I am a morning person. Even if I was out the night before it;s unusual for me to still be sleeping at 9, and on a normal morning, 7. I reguarly forget to set my alarm, and equally regularly wake up bang on the button anyway (including, most notably, when I’d only gotten to bed 3 hours before). My concentration is great all morning through until around half twelve, but from there on it’s bad news. Goldfish could learn my afternoon lectures more thoroughly than I do, and I struggle simply to keep my eyes open between about half three and half four. Come half five, however, and the lethargy vanishes instantly to be replaced by boundless energy again until such time as the evening winds down, be that ten or two. From this, I’d sumrise that I am a Morning Person. Pray that you never come to me as your GP when you’ve got a condition we had afternoon lectures on!

Any other morning people? Or do you find yourselves much better served by the later hours?

Probably one of my favourite roads, despite it being an utter bastard to drive on at any time even vaguely defined under the umbrella of ‘rush hours’.*

Driving back from Heathrow this morning it was snowy** and the dull sky transformed itself through sunrise into a glorious vista. I’ve driven north on it in the early hours to witness an orange moon hanging just above the deserted horizon and it was so gorgeous I switched off my music to appreciate it in silence.*** Somehow, even though it is a great fat motorway carving a brutal swath through the British countryside, it still manages to be beautiful. I like beautiful things.

[/pretentious babble]

*The phrase ‘rush hour’ (singular) no longer being appropriate.

**Which, admittedly, would have been more relaxing if they’d thought to grit the damn thing in the 5 miles south of Basingstoke. Bloody ice rink.

***Just after which I got overtaken by police while doing 90mph, who not only didn’t stop me but seemingly failed to notice my presence on the road at all.

Last Night

October 25, 2008 on 4:08 pm | In Happenings, Late-night Thoughts | No Comments

So last night our housemate came down from his room just after we got back from the cube (our union club) and said he’d been woken up by a woman screaming for help. We listened, and there was indeed the sound of screams and yelling. We ran outside, but were beset by fences and walls. A woman was standing outside, she’d called the police. Two cars came.

I wish I knew what happened.

Sofas

October 22, 2008 on 8:00 am | In Life | 2 Comments

There is something insidious about sofas. They lie in wait when you get back from lectures, luring you into their soft embrace, and then suddenly its 9 in the evening and you’ve sat there for 8 and a half hours chatting about whatever with your housemates, and there is still a pile of work waiting for you on  your desk when you get back to your room. It’s not even that we have a TV to stare mindlessly at or anything – it is just the virtues of a comfortable seat and good company. Time passes with bewildering speed. I love the sofas.

Which leads me to my next point – houses are great. Halls had their advantages, the closeness of just about everyone, the cleaners and the lack of specific bills and having the internet out of the box (getting internet still being the bane of my life, incidentally). However, a year is enough of halls and a house has major advantages (sofas!) and just a much nicer place to live. We have student neighbours, and we’ve been out with them a few times to get to know them (first time was humorous but nevertheless an epic failure). We have to take out our own rubbish. We have to clean and organise and cycle a lot more places if we want to get somewhere, but the social aspect of our house and the washing machine you don’t have to a) trek a mile to get to and b) pay for is bliss.

The workload is easily outclassing last years, the budgeting is boring and the prospect of ending the long road to bachelorhood is slimmer than ever, but as the lady so aptly put it (quote from memory as I can’t actually get to her blog to check), I am happy with where my life is at the moment.

I got this in my inbox this morning.

Thought it was rather amusing.

Fencing

October 20, 2008 on 8:43 am | In Happenings | 1 Comment

Last week I went to a taster session of fencing; something I’ve wanted to try for a very long time and somehow never got around to doing, and it was alright. Not fantastic, not crap, just alright. This week I woke up precisely twelve minutes before the start of the session feeling fairly dodgy after the night before, and I almost, so almost, didn’t go.

I am so glad I did. It was terrific, although my arm still aches from waving a foil around in a thrust/parry/riposte manner. It is insanely fast, somewhat technical, surprisingly tiring and strangely satisfying all at once.

If you ever have a chance to do something but you’re not sure, go. It might just make your day!

(might be getting internet soon!)
