Resolutions?

I am told that making new years resolutions, along with so many other things these days *wistful old-voice* is bad for your health (psychological health, in this instance). In the interest of my psychological health, I decided to pop back a year into the blog-that-was and glance at just what I hoped to achieve in 2008.

“1. I must not try to force romance and related things into my life – I just need to wait and be patient.

2. I have to fulfill my potential, whatever I believe that entails; being a good student, a good doctor, a good friend, or being able to let things lie.”

No cringing please. I’m supposing that while I’ve not failed at either of them, I’ve not been brilliant at them either – number 1 especially. They aren’t things which you can mystically complete, though, so I’ll just slap a ‘work in progress’ note on those and copy them across for 2009.* In the interest of my psychological health, I’ll not make any new ones: well and good, considering how broad the remit of the second resolution above is!

Good luck for the new year, all. Remember to write the correct date, and I hope the year it records treats us all well. Anyone risked making any resolutions of their own this year?

*I might also reinstate my new years resolutions for 2007, which were particularly succinct:

  • Enjoy self to the full
  • Try not to be a git

  1. September is, and has been for as long as I remember, the real start to my new year. Rejuvenated from the summer and ready to face academia again, it seems a better time to make a fresh start than the miserable, dark exam-filled weeks of January.

Having said that, why wait to make a better beginning? If you want to change, any today is as good a day as any other.

  2. In 2009, I resolve to get better, properly and for all. Doesn’t always work like that, unfortunately…

  3. I have a few but I never usually tell people what I’ve decided. They’re a personal thing but more likely I don’t like others to know I’ve failed :oP

  4. I resolve to get better at everything and in all ways, to be a better person, and to not disappoint myself. But that never changes, really!

  5. I have great time and respect for your 2007 resolutions, in part because “succinct” is such a wonderful word, and in part because so is “git”. Cheers!

Last year, I decided to revise more and write more letters, which wasn’t too difficult and has had some rather nice side effects :) This year I think I am going to keep my temper under control, get a 2:1 and go out of my way for other people a bit.

Good luck everyone and I hope very much that you have more success than you seem to expect. xx

  6. @ Flix: I agree that it makes more sense for us, whose lives are somewhat dictated by the ebb and flow of the academic year, to start afresh with the new year and to a large extent I do what you do. For the general public though (and bearing in mind the propensity of people to put off changes to a later, undefined date) the new year provides a convenient ‘new leaf’ day, complete with a change to the normal day-to-day routine they want to modify.

@ Fiona: I thought so too, and likewise. Letters are a great form of communication – I was sending them last year but people stopped replying so I stopped. Revise more, sadly, never stuck.

@ Everyone: It might have been said already, but the repetition won’t hurt – good luck!

  7. Your 2007 resolutions are the most hilarious thing I’ve read in a while, partly for the reasons Fi stated, and partly because they’re so universal and set such low targets for yourself.

I’m hopeless at writing letters but I do love recieving and sending them *hints at EVERYONE*

  8. Wouldn’t you be slightly weirded-out if a letter landed on your doorstep from someone you’d never given your address to…? :P

The key to resolutions, or targets of any kind is being specific. How do you know if you’ve achieved your goal if you’ve got nothing concrete to measure against?

  9. If I knew Jenny’s address, I’d a) send her a letter and b) tell Flix, that she might send her a letter and weird her out. I think this would be a Good Aim in life, resolutions or not!

  10. OH GOD I HAVE REACHED NEW LEVELS OF PROCRASTINATION. I am reading back through – very specifically – peoples’ New Years entries. I’m running out of entries to read.

Anyway, my address currently is (for not much longer) A5 Yarncliffe Apartments, The Edge, Endcliffe Village, Sheffield, S10 3AB. Soon to be 255 School Rd, Sheffield, S10 1GQ instead. I don’t mind saying this here becuase I have no creepy stalkers who are likely to track me to this post… and they would at least have intelligence on their side if they did so potential stalkers would be quite interesting. Letters would make my life beautiful :P.

As for trying not to be a git for 2007…I’m not entirely sure how far you managed that, but probably more than you managed it in 2006. Well done?
