Surely the aim of a protest is to raise awareness. Symbols are powerful things for such a goal. I agree with Earth Hour.

I do… but there’s only any long-term point if the message is taken on board and there’s a constant reduction in lighting usage. A yearly stunt is only so useful in itself.

I heard tell that when the lights are all switched back on, the sudden surge of power needed equates to more than had the lights been left on instead.
As for the idea of a symbol being meaningless, don’t even get me started. I have an essay to write on that!

I think a lot of people missed the message – it wasn’t meant to reduce pollution in itself more raise awareness about the situation. Sadly, I’m not sure how effective it really will be in the long run.
